The Baths of Rome

 February 26th, 2015

What an amazing experience!! Here I thought there was never going to be a quiet place in Rome, and after visiting the Baths of Diocletian today, I could not have been more wrong. It was so awesome to be in this peaceful area while knowing that the hustle and bustle of the city was just a few minutes away.

We had a guided tour of the Baths, one of the grandest public baths ever built. It was estimated that 3,000 people could have fit into the baths at the same time!!

It was fun to spend the day with the whole group! (We had maybe a little too much fun)

The mosaic work that still remained was absolutely amazing!! It was so sad that we had to imagine what the floors and walls used to look like, but seeing pieces that were left was incredible. We also learned that there was a complex tunnel system that exists below the whole area of the baths where slaves worked to keep the water heated. Our tour guide told us that the tunnels were big enough to contain enough wood to keep the baths heat sustained for 6 months straight!

I definitely hope to make it back to the Baths again before we leave, even if it is just to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere!!
