A Roman Bike Ride

Wednesday March 4th

Today was such a relaxing day exploring Via Appia on bikes! We rented bicycles and got our very own mini tour from Danilo. We not only learned a lot about the area, but got to enjoy a beautiful bike ride and nice weather!

Via Appia was one of the earliest and most important roads in Ancient Rome. It connected Rome to Apulia, which is all the way in southeast Italy. The Appian Way was named after Appius Claudius Caecus. He completed the first section of the road that was initially used as the main military road to the south during the Samnite Wars. In more modern times, the road was used as a part of the men’s marathon course for the 1960 Olympic games. (Riding a bike and staying upright was hard enough on that bumpy stone-paved road… I can’t imagine running a marathon on it!!)

Brandi and me being silly on our bike ride!

Before our bike ride, we stopped in Termini to grab some lunch to bring with us and once we got halfway through our ride, we stopped for a quick lunch break as a group. We all enjoyed lunch and each other’s company and definitely had a few laughs. We road back to the shop where we rented our bikes, Professor and Danilo treated us to some ice cream, and we headed back to Rome. It was such a great day!
